The Mystery

Sandy was, tall, blonde, quite pretty and a very smart ad agent.  She was single,an only child, her mother had died years ago.  She never knew her father or anything about him.  She was at Roxie's.  A chic business luncheon place.  Only the top execs meet here.  She was waiting for her new client to get the details on the ad campaign, she was assigned.  The hostess was directing a gentleman to her table.  He was gorgeous, she thought.  Italian background, slight graying at temples, about 20 yrs her senior and dressed to kill.  She smiled sweetly, extended her hand thinking, this is going to be interesting!

As he was nearing the table, Sandy felt a whisper of familiarity but it was quickly lost as he warmly grasped her hand. As they exchanged the requisite nicities, she again felt a touch of having been here before but was interrupted by the waiter, "I am Bruce, your waiter, may I bring you a cocktail?" The impeccably dressed gentleman had manners to match and said, "Two mimosas, please.  That is, if that suits you?"

Maureen from Maryland on 6/2/2003 added:

Bruce said that he was mesmorized by her eyes and had to meet her.   He couldn't stay long as he was leaving for business in Nebraska.   He was a furniture salesman.,and chairs were his speciality.  Bruce was torn between his job and his newest interest sitting across from him.   She was bewitching and definitely peaked his interest.

Flame from Vernon on 6/10/2003 added:

Sandy's glance flitted in confusion from the well-dressed gentleman to the waiter and back again, before settling on the waiter who stood beside the table, seemingly entranced. "Uh,Bruce...?" she queried.  "oh! I'm so sorry," the waiter apologized with a quick, nervous smile.  "I don't know what...um, I'll be right back with your drinks, ok?  Please, excuse me."  With that, he hurried away.  Sandy, blushing in confusion, just smiled and shook her head. The man, however, stared after Bruce for quite some time.  Remarkably, he had mentally rehearsed that same greeting on his way to the table only moments before, and he was very startled, to say the least, upon hearing the words spoken instead by Bruce.  Flustered, he turned back to Sandy, whose eyes held an unspoken question.  "That was most remarkable.  I just don't know what to make of it..."

Flame from Vernon on 9/10/2003 added:

Unaware that the waiter had voiced the thoughts of her client, Mr. Marcus C. Deveraux , Sandy commented "I guess he mistook me for someone else - maybe he's working too hard, as a salesman during the day, then waitering at night".  She quirked an eyebrow, saying, "It's interesting, though, you seem to have a lot in common..."  ("Much more than you know" he thought.) "...you specialize in chairs, too, as I recall?"  Relieved to have an opportunity to shift his focus from the bizarre incident, he acknowledged, "Yes, we honor the traditions passed down from the Caetani family craftsmen for over a century."  Sandy, stunned, barely held back a gasp when she realized that Marcus C. Deveraux was connected to THAT Caetani family.  The long-time bitter rivalry between that family and hers was why, 10 years ago, she had finally distanced herself from all of them, and legally changed her name from Sophia Caetani to Sandy  Baronne.  It was all too much trouble, and Sandy wouldn't allow herself to be drawn into that mess ever again.
